| Garages Get Cramped, Owners Seek Solutions |
 |
(August 4, 2006) -- Americans are stuffing more stuff than ever into their garages, fueling demand for organizational equipment.
Manufacturers sold $1.2 billion of organizational and storage products for the garage in 2004, up 50 percent from 1999, according to the most-recent data available from the Freedonia Group, a market-research firm in Cleveland.
Most home owners devote at least one car bay to storage, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders. Luckily, there are many new products to help home owners keep their stuff organized.
Among them: Stor-Pod and RacorPro+.
- Stor-Pods are polypropylene, tent-like products that protects items like clothes from dust and damp. They cost $29-$69, depending on size, and are made by Jokari Inc.
- RacorPro+ is a hand-cranked garage lift is designed to easily get heavy items like lawn mowers out of the way. It can hold up to 250 pounds, but the company says users feel as if they're cranking no more than 50. It eliminates the need to get up on a ladder. The price is $190. The manufacturer is Racor Inc. .
