| Global Housing Trends Point the Way for U.S. |
 |
(September 8, 2006) --
London's financial newspaper, The Economist, points out that worldwide the housing market is rising faster than it did a year ago.
In 10 of the 20 countries tracked by The Economist, prices are rising at double-digit rates, compared with only seven countries last year.
Only Spain, Hong Kong and South Africa have seen slowdowns.
European housing markets, including Denmark, Belgium, Ireland, France, and Sweden, have risen the most. And the German market is improving after a decade of flat or falling prices.
Britain and Australia signaled the U.S. slowdown, falling from a 20 percent annual growth rate in 2003 to nearly flat last summer. But this year, prices have picked up, rising about 6.5 percent in both countries.
Some argue that this soft landing bodes well for American homes - and the American economy.
