| Picking Upgrades Can Overwhelm New-Home Buyers |
 |
(July 17, 2006) -- Newhome buyers can be faced with a daunting number of choices - everything from color and type of carpet to molding designs and doorknobs. How do you decide?
Builders recommend that buyers plan to pay about 10 percent of the purchase price for upgrades. If buyers are on a limited budget, they should focus on things that are difficult to change later. It's easy to switch appliances but much harder to add a fireplace.
Choosing neutral colors for carpet, countertops and paint is always wise, especially for buyers who don't intend to live in a home more than a few years.
People with children or pets should choose the flooring that suits their needs and be prepared to replace it if down the road they decide to sell.
